Top Ten Classic Rom-Com Movie Rentals

Inexpensive and Original Date Night DVD Ideas

Nov 16, 2009 Jocelyn Kerr

AFI's list of top 10 romantic comedies make great date night movie rentals. Since they're classics, rentals can be found free or for less than new DVD rentals.

Planning a Friday date night? Thinking about dinner and a DVD rental? Instead of the usual new movie blockbuster, try one of these classic romantic comedies chosen by members of the American Film Institute.

In 2008, AFI released its list of the all-time best romantic comedies, as voted on by filmmakers and AFI members. Here are the films they chose:

Top 10 Date Night Movie Rentals

  1. City Lights (1931): Charlie Chaplin writes, directs and stars in this silent-era classic; the Little Tramp attempts to help a blind girl gain sight.
  2. Annie Hall (1977): The Woody Allen film that won Diane Keaton an Oscar, this non-linear film charts the course of their relationship.
  3. It Happened One Night (1934): Frank Capra directs Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in this classic boy-meets-girl tale between a socialite and a journalist.
  4. Roman Holiday (1953): The story of a princess falling in love with a journalist, this film directed by William Wyler stars Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
  5. The Philadelphia Story (1941): Perhaps best known as the film that resurrected Katharine Hepburn's career, George Cukor directs Hepburn alongside Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in a society wedding gone wrong.
  6. When Harry Met Sally... (1989): Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this faux-documentary about finding true love; directed by Rob Reiner.
  7. Adam's Rib (1949): Another George Cukor-Katharine Hepburn collaboration, this time starring Hepburn's real-life love, Spencer Tracy. Hepburn and Tracy play married lawyers, battling against each other on a case.
  8. Moonstruck (1987): Cher won an Oscar for her performance in this film as the unlucky-in-love woman who finally falls in love (with the wrong man); also stars Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis, directed by Norman Jewison.
  9. Harold and Maude (1971): Perhaps the most non-traditional romantic pairing ever written, Hal Ashby directs Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort in this coming-of-age comedy about suicide and May-December love.
  10. Sleepless in Seattle (1993): The second appearance of Meg Ryan on this list, here she joins Tom Hanks to find true love via the radio; directed by Nora Ephron.

How About Free DVD Rentals for Friday Date Night?

The good news about all these films is they're classics, so most of these DVDs will be available at local libraries for free. Whether date night is Friday or any other day, skip the local movie rental fee and pick up desert instead.

Of course, if they're not at the library they'll be available on any online movie rental site. It won't be free, but it will be convenient.

Classic Movie Date Night

Use this list as a starting point to explore other classic movie rentals. Some local chain DVD rental stores don't carry classic films, but free DVD rentals are available at libraries. And of course online movie rental sites have a large selection. So whether it's Friday date night, or any night, consider a classic movie to get the evening started.
